Spiritual Warfare and Deliverance I

Eph 2:1-3 – “And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, 2in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, 3among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.”

Eph 6:11-12 – “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

Those who want to live for God and serve him should understand that there is a war to be faced against Satan and his army. Satan influences the world and the sons of disobedience through the lusts of their flesh.

Origin, falling and eternal destiny of Satan

Eze 28:11-19 – “…You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; you were on the holy mountain of God; you walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones. 15You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, till iniquity was found in you. 16By the abundance of your trading you became filled with violence within and you sinned; therefore I cast you as a profane thing out of the mountain of God…”

Isa 14:12-15 – “How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, you who weakened the nations! 13For you have said in your heart: “I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north;14I will ascend above the heights of the clouds,
I will be like the Most High.15Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, to the lowest depths of the Pit.”

Rev 12:7-12 – “And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, 8but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. 9So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.10Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. 11And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death. 12Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time.”

Rev 20:1-3 – “Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; 3and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things he must be released for a little while.”

Rev 20:7-10 – “Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison 8and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea. 9They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them. 10The devil, who deceived them (who accused them), was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

How do demons come in?

The devil chooses the weakest moment and the weakest place. Here are some of the ways that demons gain access to human personality:

A family background in the occult or false religions

“You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself any carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is a in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and forth generations of those who hate Me” (Exo 20:3-5).

Contact to divination and fortune telling exposes people to demons, and the predictions of a psychic about the course of a person’s life often amounts to a declaration of Satin’s destiny for that life. If that happens in your presence, do not receive it, rebuke it in the name of Jesus. The bible say’s “walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Cor 5:7).

“Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults with the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord” (Deut 18:10-12).

Martial arts, yoga, secular rock music, hypnosis, acupuncture are other potential door openers for demons. One purpose common to all forms of witchcraft is control. Whenever this kind of controlling relationship exists between two people, the person being controlled almost invariably needs deliverance from witchcraft, and the person that does the controlling must repent and renounce the control, and the person being controlled must repent of submitting to such control and this binding relationship. This happens between mother and daughters, fathers and sons, husband and wife, etc…

Idle words

Jesus warns; “But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the Day of Judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned” (Mat 12:36-37). What are idle words? They are words we utter thoughtlessly: “I am sick and tired. “I nearly died laughing,” You’ll die when you here this one,” “I wish you were dead,” “I’d better of dead,” ”I am so stupid.”

Do Christians ever need deliverance from demons?

The ministry of Phillip in Samaria suggests that it is so. If demons left automatically when the people believed and were baptized, why would Phillip have spent time and energy driving them out?

Can demons enter a person after he or she is already a Christian?

Satan is more likely to increase his pressures against us when we become Christians, especially to Christians, not to unbelievers. The promises and warnings alike apply to Christians. : Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom be a devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world: (1 Pet 5:8-9).

Will the Holy Spirit indwell an unclean vessel?

Yes: “Do not take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation” (Psalms 51:11-12).

Satan character, his deeds and position

Satan means adversary; Devil means slanderous or calumnious.

1 Pet 5:8 – “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”

2 Tim 2:25-26 – “…they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.”

2 Cor 11:3 – “But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.”

Job 1:6-12 – “Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them. 7And the LORD said to Satan, “From where do you come?” So Satan answered the LORD and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.” 8Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil?” 9So Satan answered the LORD and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing? 10Have you not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. 11But now, stretch out your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely curse you to your face!” 12And the LORD said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand on his person.” So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.”

John 12:31 – “Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.”

2 Cor 4:4 – “whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ…”

John 8:44 – “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.”

John 10:10 – “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”

1 Tess 3:5 – “For this reason, when I could no longer endure it, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter had tempted you, and our labor might be in vain.”

Matthew 4:1-3 – “Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. 3Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”

Matthew 4:8-9 – “Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9And he said to Him, “All these things I will give you if you will fall down and worship me.”

1 John 3:8-10 – “He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. 9Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.10 In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother.”

1 Tim 4:1 – “Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons,”

2 Cor 11:13-15 – “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. 14And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. 15Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.”

Mat 13:19 – “When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the wayside.”

Mat 13:37-39 – “He answered and said to them: “He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. 38The field is the world, the good seeds are the sons of the kingdom, but the tares are the sons of the wicked one. 39The enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels.

Mat 4:24 – “Then His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them.”

Spiritual Warfare

Soldiers are trained to keep their equipment to battle-ready condition. Weapons are cleaned and oiled, communication equipment is checked and double checked, and helmets are kept in place in case of a sudden attack. If we prepare so diligently to face a human enemy, Paul says, how much more ought we to prepare for battle against our spiritual enemy? Satin will attack, he says, and only the believer who is grounded in the truth will recognize his lies. Only a personal acceptance by faith of God’s love can protect our hearts from Satin’s fiery temptations. Only a sure knowledge of salvation protects our minds from doubt. And only the word of God and the power of Jesus Christ can cause Satin to flee in terror. Are you fully prepared for the battle?

Ephesians 6:10-18, A final word, be strong with the Lord’s mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies and tricks of the Devil. For we are not fighting against people made of flesh and blood, but against the evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against those mighty powers of darkness who rules this world, and against wicked spirits in the heavenly realms. Use every piece of God’s armor to resist the enemy in the time of evil, so that after the battle you will be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the sturdy belt of truth and body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from Good News, so that you will be fully prepared. In every battle you will need Faith as your shield to stop the fiery arrows aimed at you by Satin Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God. Pray at all times and on every occasion in the power of the Holy Spirit. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all Christians everywhere.
